Thakek Old Town

In Thakhek, you will discover that the town’s history is still present today in the Old Town beside the Mekong river. You can walk around the heritage quarter in streets around the town square. This mixture of shops, cafes, businesses and people’s homes includes complete rows of shophouses, grand stone residences and traditional wooden houses. The different influences in building styles can be explained by the town’s name – Thakhek means “Guest landing”, and for hundreds of years it has been a boat landing for foreign traders. As well as getting to know Thakhek, you can enjoy a cool drink or a meal beside the Mekong and stay in historic buildings now renovated as hotels and guest houses.
